Job Vacancy: Exercise Physiologist and Coach – Cape Town, South Africa

JOB DESCRIPTION

Science to Sport is seeking an energetic and enthusiastic individual to join our team.

We are recruiting an Exercise Physiologist who will perform physiological tests and cycling biomechanics assessments (bike fitting) in our Cape Town laboratory at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa and assist with coaching (running and cycling).

Previous experience with coaching, performance testing and bike fitting would be preferable. In addition, the position has numerous opportunities and career advancement prospects.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

You will be expected to:

  • Biomechanical & metabolic assessment: Conduct and interpret assessments such as bike fits, metabolic testing, and VO2 max protocols to establish precise training zones and status
    • Communicate with clients regarding services offered, booking arrangements, invoicing and payment collection.
    • Calibration of testing equipment (CPET COSMED)
    • Translation of data into reporting formats
  • Periodisation & physiological modelling: Design macro, meso and microcycles based on individual athlete physiology, utilising principles of progressive overload and supercompensation to optimise peak performance for specific race dates while mitigating injury risk.
  • Data analysis & metric interpretation: Analyse workout files daily using platforms like TrainingPeaks or WKO5, interpreting key metrics (e.g., TSS, IF, normalised power/graded pace, heart rate variability, and decoupling) to adjust training loads and prescriptions dynamically.
  • Evidence-based nutrition & recovery strategy: Develop integrated fuelling strategies for training and racing based on metabolic demands (carbohydrate/fluid intake rates per hour) and prescribe recovery modalities backed by current sports science literature (e.g., sleep hygiene, nutritional timing).
  • Performance analytics & predictive profiling: Utilise historical performance data to model future race outcomes, establish realistic power/pace durations curves, and create pacing strategies scientifically aligned with the athlete’s critical power or threshold capabilities.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science, Sport Science, Sports Medicine or a related field of study
  • Experience in coaching of athletes from beginner to advanced, running and or cycling 
  • Excellent academics (average of 65% or greater) 
  • Valid code B driver’s license and access to a vehicle 
  • Must be able to work at the Science to Sport Performance Laboratory and the Sports Science Institute of South Africa in Newlands, Cape Town or at off-site locations, as required 
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve goals while working in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment 
  • Must be detail-oriented with the ability to maintain and deliver a high level of quality and accuracy  
  • Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills 
  • Demonstrate excellent organisational and time management skills – and the ability to manage priorities
